History:
Maria Callas (1923–1977) was a Greek-American soprano celebrated as one of the most influential opera singers of the 20th century. Known as “La Divina,” she was renowned for her extraordinary vocal range, dramatic intensity, and transformative interpretations of classical operatic roles. Callas revived interest in the bel canto style and brought new depth to roles in operas by Bellini, Verdi, and Puccini.
Despite vocal challenges in her later years, her artistry and charisma left an enduring legacy in opera. Her tumultuous personal life, including her affair with Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, added to her mystique. Callas remains an icon of passion and excellence in the world of classical music.
